On Blogging: Personally Speaking…

You ask me, "Why do you blog?" Respondeo:
I started out on the web writing tutorials for people I meet and hope would read me online and for others whom I’ve never met but who ask questions that I felt I had the competence to answer. It was this that prompted me to build up my first tutorial website. However during the course of building up the website, I found myself staying more and more logged into the internet downloading stuff that I would like to use for enhancements or simply for improving my coded page. It was during the moments when I waited for big downloads (which lasted up to an hour sometimes) that I wondered what other things to do instead of just waiting. It was during one of these boring moments that I opened up an account at Blogger and started posting whatever thought that came to mind. It was then that I started blogging.
My first experience with blogging was motivated by boredom. That didn’t last long; I deleted my first (and last) Blogger account some time later. I still maintained my website tutorials though. But then there occured a time when I ran out of subjects for a tutorial. People would come to my site and would ask: "Hey, are you still updating? What are you going to write about next?" So I put up a facility that connected my pages at Geocities to a newsposting device installed at our family website. And for some time that served as my "What’s New?" portion. It was while posting news through that facility that I discovered how useful it would be not just to post updates but to publish my thoughts though disjointed they may be on other things apart from HTML , the Catechism and the Bible. So I began looking around for good blogging applications that include the ability to publish by dates, allow people to comment so as to come up with a "machine" that can generate for me suggestions for topics to write about systematically later on. So I blogged.
I first formally blogged with the GreyMatter software I installed. It was followed later on by the GeekLog I set up at Nossumus (now defunct). Right now, I am becoming more at home with WordPress and B2Evolution. After years of blogging (2001-present), I find that I blog motivated by the following reasons:

  1. to while the time away as I downloaded a software or simply when I don’t have anything else to do;
  2. to comment on the new things I find on the WWW
  3. to further elaborate on a fuzzy point in a tutorial I have published
  4. to simply say "Hi" to those who visit my site
  5. to promote knowledge about a software related to one of my tutorials
  6. to raise a certain question for discussion in the form of a challenge or an invitation to collaboratively understand it
  7. to tell others why I’ve not been adding new materials to the site
  8. to share something about my life offline and dispel any doubts as to whether I am or I am not connected to a computer
In other words, blogging has become for me both recreation, work and a tool for communication.
